Objectives: The primary objectives of this project are as follows:

  1. To investigate climate-induced migration in Bangladesh driven by environmental risks resulting from climate change.
  2. To understand the reasons why disaster-affected individuals cannot return to their places of origin.
  3. To explore government and private sector initiatives in providing shelter and livelihood opportunities to affected populations.
  4. To analyze coordination mechanisms among various stakeholders to strengthen urban emergency preparedness and response.

Locations: The project will be conducted in the following regions within Bangladesh:

  • Barisal
  • Bhola
  • Patuakhali
  • Noakhali
  • Jhalokathi
  • Mymensingh
  • Netrokona
  • Jamalpur
  • Sherpur
  • Sunamganj

Duration: The project is scheduled to be carried out over a period of 3 months, from April 2023 to September 2023.

Narrative Description of Project: This project, initiated by ActionAid Bangladesh, is aimed at gaining a comprehensive understanding of climate-induced migration within Bangladesh, particularly in regions affected by climate change-related environmental risks. The study seeks to delve into the factors preventing disaster-affected individuals from returning to their places of origin and also examines the role of government and private sector initiatives in providing shelter and livelihood opportunities to these affected populations.

The project’s scope encompasses an analysis of coordination mechanisms among various stakeholders with the ultimate goal of strengthening urban emergency preparedness and response in the face of climate-induced migration. The project will yield valuable outputs, including audio recordings of case studies, an inception report complete with a work plan, a comprehensive study report containing recommendations, and concise 4-page summaries highlighting key findings.

Description of Actual Services Provided by AIRD: The services provided by AIRD (Assistance for International Research and Development) during the project implementation include:

  • Developing an inception report and methodology for the study.
  • Creating questionnaires for data collection.
  • Conducting primary data collection in the specified regions.
  • Gathering secondary data relevant to the study.
  • Data entry and analysis.
  • Ongoing monitoring of the project’s progress.
  • Comprehensive report writing is based on the collected data and analysis.
