Objectives:

The objective of the Bangladesh Urban Resilience Project (BURP) is to enhance the resilience of urban communities in Dhaka and Sylhet by reducing seismic and disaster risks, strengthening emergency management, building capacity among responders and officials, improving infrastructure and land use planning, and promoting public awareness to protect lives, property, and livelihoods.

Location: Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Sylhet City Corporation

Duration: 2 months (29th April 2024 to 30th June 2024)

Narrative description: The Bangladesh Urban Resilience Project (BURP), implemented in Dhaka and Sylhet, aims to enhance urban resilience against floods, cyclones, and earthquakes. The project focuses on seismic risk reduction, emergency management, capacity building, risk assessment, and land use planning. Key activities include infrastructure development, training for responders and officials, policy support for building codes and land use regulations, and public awareness campaigns. BURP seeks to strengthen disaster preparedness and create safer, more resilient urban communities.

Description of actual service provided by AIRD:

  • Project management and coordination, including stakeholder engagement.
  • Risk assessment for seismic, flood, and cyclone hazards.
  • Development and implementation of emergency response plans, training, and equipment provision.
  • Promotion of resilient infrastructure, earthquake-resistant construction, and land use planning.
  • Capacity building for government officials, engineers, and communities on disaster preparedness and response.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of project progress and impact.
  • Final Endline Evaluation Report.
