Project Information

Title:

Study on Threatened wildlife species, Threat assessment and Projection of Coastal afforestation Impacts in habitat enhancement at Nijhum Dweep National Park, Char Kukri-mukri Wildlife Sanctuary and Tengragiri Wildlife Sanctuary

Client:

Sustainable Forests and Livelihoods (SUFAL) Project, Bangladesh Forest Department (BFD)

Description:

Objectives: This project aimed to conduct a comprehensive study focused on threatened wildlife species and their habitats in Bangladesh, particularly in the areas of Nijhum Dweep National Park, Char Kukri-mukri Wildlife Sanctuary, and Tengragiri Wildlife Sanctuary. The objectives included assessing the abundance, current status, and habitat preferences of specific wildlife species, evaluating threats to these species, examining human-wildlife conflicts, and assessing the impact of afforestation efforts on wildlife habitats. The ultimate goal was to develop conservation strategies to protect the country’s diverse wildlife.

Location: Noakhali, Bhola, and Barguna (Nijhum Dweep National Park, Char Kukri-mukri Wildlife Sanctuary, and Tengragiri Wildlife Sanctuary), Bangladesh

Duration of Assignment: 12 months (October 2023 – Ongoing)

Narrative Description of Project: Bangladesh’s rich biodiversity faces significant threats from human activities such as habitat destruction, urbanization, and extraction. The coastal zones, including the Sundarbans mangrove forest, play a crucial role in supporting various species, particularly migratory birds. However, human interference in these areas, including fishing and overgrazing, poses a serious threat to wildlife. The Tengragiri Wildlife Sanctuary is home to endangered species like the Fishing Cat. To address these challenges, a detailed research project was initiated to identify threats, assess the impact of afforestation, and mitigate human-wildlife conflicts and wildlife crimes. The study aimed to provide valuable insights and conservation strategies.
